How do you instill (good) habits in kids? It takes a long time, that’s all I know so far with almost ten years of parenting. And when I look at the bigger picture, sometimes I feel overwhelmed at looking at point Z when I need to just look at point A. Point A today and for the x amount of days (unknowable at this point), it’s instilling my children’s morning time routine until it becomes second nature / habit.⁣ I’ve been really learning to focus on one thing at a time. Applying that to teaching kids habits, it’s really helpful to work on one little thing at a time. And once it’s a habit, we’ll work through the next thing. Oftentimes habits get dropped because I try to take on too many at once. Less is always more, right! ⁣Today on the blog, I’m sharing about our kids’ morning routine and a little bit about how to instill habits.

What’s a habit?

A habit is “a settled or regular tendency or practice, especially one that is hard to give up.” Sounds good, right? A large percentage of our daily actions are habits!

How can you form new habits? There are lots of different ways and research out there on the right way to go about habits. Here’s one blog looking at some of those ways. I personally like doing the one at a time and then move on way of going about instilling habits. It’s worked well for me and our family for a long time.

Hi, I’m Kelly! I’m a mother of four children - three boys, one toddler girl - and our family lives on the beautiful east coast of Canada. I’m a past elementary teacher, turned stay at home, work at home mom eight years ago after I had my second child. I’ve found that the busier I’ve become and as my children age, that it’s become even more important to figure out what is most important to me and us as a family. Living a simpler lifestyle has helped us in so many ways in our home life - from better routines to faster tidying up times. It has been through my children that I have been inspired to learn how to effectively manage my time and to simplify in all areas of my home and life. I enjoy helping busy moms simplify home life by teaching flexible planning methods and skills. Enjoyed this blog and think it would be helpful to others? I'd love if you shared it. Thank you!
